What is Equine-Interactive Psychotherapy and Learning (EIPL)?

That's a good question. It doesn't help that there are several similar-sounding names like Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT), Equine-Facilitated Learning (EFL) and Equine-Facilitated Mental Health (EFMH) to name a few.

Many people are vague about an exact definition of EIPL  because it can take many forms. It's like asking, "What is psychotherapy?" Two people sitting in a room having a conversation is what happens during traditional psychotherapy, yet, although we know that talking about our feelings allows us to feel better, that's clearly not all therapy is. Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy relies on the horse as a mirror to help humans gain insight and develop awareness into our behaviors and motivations and effect change where we need it. Incorporating exercises that involve both the horse and therapist with the client provide an opportunity for us to gain deeper understanding of why we do the things we do. If that's still too vague, NARHA defines it as:

Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) - Experiential psychotherapy that includes equine(s).  It may include, but is not limited to, a number of mutually respectful equine activities such as handling, grooming, lunging, riding, driving, and vaulting. EFP is facilitated by a licensed/credentialed mental health professional working with an appropriately credentialed equine professional.

What is EMDR?

According to the EMDR Institute,
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a comprehensive, integrative psychotherapy approach. It contains elements of many effective psychotherapies in structured protocols that are designed to maximize treatment effects. These include psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies.
What is Reiki?

The International Center for Reiki Training describes it as:

...a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life-force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

Equine Energetix understands that an integrative approach to growth and healing is vital to success. Too often we find something that initially works, only to be disappointed when our results diminish over time. How many times have we felt that rush of excitement after an “Aha!” moment, only to then be confused when everything doesn’t fit into place as it should?

The comprehensive multidisciplinary approach at Equine Energetix relies on an array of perspectives and services with the  understanding that different people (and different horses!) learn differently. Some people will respond to one approach while others do better with a combination of techniques.

As a psychotherapist and scholar, James Cassese recognizes not only that a fun atmosphere can enhance learning and growth, but also emphasizes the role of clinical experience in helping to foster change. His
substantial clinical background informs the Equine Energetix approach and assists us in tailoring a program to fit your individual or group needs, employing a variety of professionals and techniques.

For the individual, we offer:

Equine-Interactive Psychotherapy (EFP) with your horse, or at Mistover, with one of our trusted horses.

This can be a single 3-hour session, or as-needed ongoing work.

Life Coaching

For clients interested in identifying and achieving personal goals, life coaching focuses on the present, with little emphasis directed at the uncovering of the psychological roots of contemporary behaviors. Utilizing a variety of techniques, the coach assists the client in establishing a systematic approach to reaching the dreams that  have
perhaps been put off for too long, or have not yet expressed themselves.

Equine-Interactive Life Coaching

With the introduction of the horse into the coaching, action learning can enhance the coaching experience. Mistover has provided us with a herd of remarkable horses to assist us, or arrangements can be made if you'd prefer to work with your own horse. Give you and your horse an experiential learning vacation, by boarding at Mistover overnight or longer, riding in their meticulously cared-for arenas and setting up Life Coach intensives with James or Wagner.

Overcoming Training Obstacles
Have you ever had a sudden realization while riding, when you recognized a pattern from your life that was playing out in your relationship with your horse?
Have you ever wondered why you struggle with the same issues with your riding, despite the clinics you’ve attended and the trainers you’ve tried? What if it were possible to develop or enhance psychological insight while riding? What if a life coach, mentor or therapist assisted in the development of psychological understanding while you develop your skills as a rider?

Just as the trainer takes you to a level of horsemanship that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to achieve on your own,
the clinician working with EFP  can help you achieve new levels of insight and awareness in your life.

Individual sessions can be scheduled to examine your training goals and uncover what might be holding you back.

Present us with a video of your lesson and work with the clinician to examine it through a psychotherapeutic lens.

Invite the clinician to watch your lesson as it is happening and debrief it with you afterward.

This approach can stand alone or work in conjunction with EFP.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
As certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) professionals, we can address fear, trauma, or even training-related issues using this proven brief treatment method on humans.

With groups in mind, we provide:

Equine-Interactive Experiential Learning Workshops
Years of experience facilitating workshops internationally inform our ability to create programs that are cutting edge, innovative and substantial. Equine Energetix is proud to partner with pioneers in the field, such as Kathleen Barry Ingram and Leigh Shambo, to design exciting workshops that weave together the latest research and information with fun, equine-guided experiential
personal growth & learning.

Equine-Interactive Workplace Development
For large and small companies, we can customize team-building workshops in a fun and fascinating environment that workers will experience as exciting and educational. Horses take us places and, with Equine-Interactive Growth and Learning, your team or business can increase productivity, work through conflicts, and develop new ways of communicating. Our staff is qualified to administer the Meyers Briggs Personality Typing Interview, and certified Hogan Development Survey Assessments, integrating time-proven assessment scales with the enjoyment of being around horses.

Equestrian Facility Workshops
Reduce attrition at your barn by developing a solid community and providing a fun atmosphere for growth and socializing. We can provide short presentations about any of our services. For example, riders often like to know about EMDR and working with fear. Equine Energetix will meet with your staff to develop a workshop or program to meet the barn and boarder's needs. We can develop a Zen Mindfulness afternoon for your boarders or workshops to enhance teamwork among your staff.

Equine Energetix also helps the horse! We offer:

Equine Tapping for Change and Healing
Applying the bilateral stimulation (the foundation of EMDR) on horses, we can reduce stress and address difficult behavioral issues.

The equine tapping for change and healing (ETCH) experience consists of a package 4 to 5 sessions:  One or two 60-minute assessment(s) & introduction, 30-60 minutes introduction of technique to horse; two 60-minute horse sessions.

We can provide Reiki treatments for your horse or offer animal communication to assist with particular issues or challenges you and your equine partner may be experiencing.

As powerfully energetic beings, horses are particularly responsive to the life force movement that is central to Reiki. It is a natural healing approach that is non-invasive and can help relax your horse, reduce pain and improve responses to other types of healing. As the energy moves through the animal, their chewing, licking and sighing responses are clear indicators of how much they enjoy the Reiki experience. Although, like massage, Reiki can be used in a variety of ways, we have found Reiki to be especially useful to helped a stressed horse, or during periods of heavy training, recovery from injury.

Animal communicating can be a powerful tool in helping the owner or rider understand the horse's experience. Whether there is a particular issue that puzzles you, or you just want to find out what your horse is thinking, the animal communicator can act as a translator between you and your horse. Once that communication is established, the animal communicator can help you to apply what you have learned to your relationship with your equine companion.
